Ultra-absorbant black
The fractured mask surface absorbs nearly all incident light (99.4%). This can make 3D objects appear flat.
Light-emitting bulb
A light bulb positioned behind the mask shines, creating crontrast as light emerges from the cracks in the face.
Reflecting mirror
A mirror behind the bulb allows viewers additional perspective into the inner workings of the artwork while adding another optical element.
The Work
F.A.C.E. places three optical extremes in context with one another: a surface that absorbs all light, a source that emits it, and a mirror that reflects it back. The fractured mask — positioned in front of both the bulb and the mirror was built from a scan of Daniel's actual face.
The whole piece together is meant to represent emerging from a dark time. It signals a shedding of a flat, energy-absorbing visage being shed to let light shine anew. Each component of this sculpture represents how people have the capacity to absorb, emit, and reflect light and energy in both physical and social ways.
